Public Health Campaign: Design

For my chosen topic of domestic abuse I did a little internet research to see what campaigns have already been put out there. There are several examples but many campaigns are quite similar. I am aiming this project towards young adults so what better idea than somehow incorporate technology into the picture.

This was my idea, have two models, one male one female, holding a mobile phone over an area of their face, eye and mouth. On the phone is a picture of that area bruised as an affect from a domestic but without the phone they look just like any other person. What I wanted to include also was a Twitter hashtag to interact more with those affected my domestic violence so they have somewhere to go to share their experiences and seek help.

The two existing posters on the left have heavily influenced my design so I wanted to achieve a similar look and feel. This involved some photography so I had to book the studio. My plan was to take photos of my model sitting on a stool focused on her face, with just a modest amount of make-up on holding a mobile phone over her eye, then I asked my friend who specialises in make-up to apply dark shadows around the eye area to give the impression of a black eye. Once my photos were done, I needed to do Photoshop editing and cropping to edit the image of the black eye into the screen of the phone.

This was my plan for the studio, taking a look at lighting set-ups and my plant of action for my time allocated in the studio itself.

I planned to have the Twitter hash-tag circling the models head appearing almost 'halo' like. The page above shows my progress on achieving the text to appear this way.

Here's my first poster. I am really pleased with the overall look, I feel I achieved everything that I set out to do. I do like it, however, one thing is bugging me, to me it looks too similar to the campaigns that I used as inspiration. I'm stuck between two minds here, I either continue with this design or I do something completely different and something more engaging. Since I'm not entirely happy with producing something that looks too similar to existing campaigns, I am going to start fresh with a new design and new concept.
